Age of Empires RoR Compatibility Issue (Windows 7)
Alright. This is going to sound a little strange, but lately I have been interested in playing video games from my childhood. Namely Age of Empires: Rise of Rome, Age of Empires II, Starcraft: Brood War, etc.
I understand that Microsoft is large company that is moving to the future, but it seems that these fun legacy games are being left behind. Compatibility Mode is 90% of the time useless and I have to resort to Ending the explorer.exe processto fix colour issues.
The problem I wish to address at the moment is with Age of Empires: Rise of Rome.
These are my specs:
Toshiba Qosmio X505-Q180X
320GB HDD 5400 RPM
620GB HDD 5400 RPM
Intel i7 2360QM 2.0-2.9GHz
18.1" LCD Display, 1680 x 945 Native Resolution
Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit
I realize this system is more than likely to be overkill but I would still like some advice. Despite the power of my system, it seems that the game would run significantly slower than usual. Even the menus from Main to setting up a game takes almost three seconds to make the graphical transition. The Windows loading ring appears as well. When in-game, Fast game setting is actually Normal, and Very Fast is like Speedy Gonzalez. Ironically nothing else is wrong with the game, but I prefer Fast over Normal. As before, Compatibility Mode for Windows XP or Windows 98 would do nothing, the other Windows options for the game don't seem to have any effect.
I have reason to believe that this is due to my hardware. Windows 7 Professional is on another Toshiba Laptop of mine that only has Shared Video Memory and it runs like it would in XP. Flawless, don't care at all about the 4:3 aspect ratio. It could also be a Graphics Accelerator but I'm not sure.
But I would like to know if there is a simple workaround for this problem on my gaming rig, or I'm just gonna have to stick to older computers for my older games. I'm more than willing to troubleshoot more upon being given the advice.
Are you trying to run the original release or the one included in Age of Empires Gold?
Old software and new hardware can often conflict with each other and cause various problems like the one you are experiencing and if you are using the original release of the game, there is a higher chance of it not working correctly.
